A worrying trend of diabetes will increase by 2025, the diabetes prevalence of 31.3% for adults aged 18 years and above. According to the Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said :

'Some 3.6 million Malaysians are suffering from diabetes, the highest rate of incidence in Asia and one of the highest in the world'

Diabetes mellitus, also known simply as Diabetes, involves how conditions your body turns food into energy. When you eat a carbohydrate, your body turns it into a sugar called glucose and sends that to your bloodstream. Your pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps move glucose from your blood into your cells, which use it for energy.

Body has Pancrease > release insulin (hormone) > helps move glucose to cell > release into energy

Diabetes happen when you body does not use insulin like a healthy person. The condition where too much glucose stays in your blood called HIGH BLOOD SUGAR.

Type of diabetes :
  • Type 1 Diabetes : An autoimmune condition because it often begins in childhood. Your body attack pancreas with antibodies, organ is damaged and cannot produce insulin. It could also happen because of problems with cells in your pancreas that make insulin.
  •  Type 2 Diabetes : Non-insulin-dependent or adult onset diabetes. This happen when your pancreas usually creates some insulin. But either it’s not enough or your body does not use it like it should be.
  • Gestatinal Diabetes : This condition usually happen in pregnant women caused by some form of insulin resistance.  Insulin resistance is when your cells don’t respond to insulin

Below the articles that reported the heart attack leading to death. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), in 2019 the average of 50 people Malaysian die because of Ischaemic Heart Disease everyday! What a large number!

Who in Risk :
Family history of early cardiovascular disease
Smoking
Hypertension (high blood pressure; more than 140/80mmHg)
Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol level >240mg/dL)
Obesity (BMI>30)

Wait, the risk factors categorized by two group?

I) Modifiable
Modifiable risk factors such as smoking, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and diabetes mellitus can be controlled by lifestyle interventions

II) Non-modifiable
Non-modifiable risk factors such as age, gender and family history are factors that cannot be altered but you can work to lower the risk of getting it!

So,  what tips to control the symptoms?

To control the symptoms and progression of many cardiovascular conditions, there have to be some important lifestyle changes, like introducing a healthy diet, quitting all form of smoking, replacing alcohol with water, and performing a healthy amount of exercise.

A lack of regular physical activity has been proven to be directly related to causing heart disease.

Control your blood pressure because high blood pressure is major risk of getting heart disease. It is important to check your blood pressure regularly.

Keep your cholesterol and triglyceride levels under control. High levels of cholesterol can clog your arteries and raise your risk of coronary artery disease and heart attack.

 -HYPERTENSION/HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE-

High blood pressure or hypertension is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease, stroke and even death!

Hypertension is when blood pressure is too high. Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure.

How to know hypertension?

Blood pressure is written as two numbers:

I) The first (systolic) number represents the pressure in blood vessels when the heart contracts or beats.

II) Second (diastolic) number represents the pressure in the vessels when the heart rests between beats.

Hypertension is diagnose if systolic and diastolic ≥140/90mmHg.

Symptom:

I) Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms
ii) A few people may have headaches, shortness of breath or nosebleeds, but usually don't occur until high blood pressure has reached a severe or life threatening stage.

What are the risk factors for hypertension?

Modifiable risk factors include
Unhealthy diets (excessive salt consumption
Diet high in saturated fat and trans fats
Low intake of fruits and vegetables)
Physical inactivity
Consumption of tobacco and alcohol
Overweight or obese.
Family history of hypertension, age over 65 years
