What is Gout?

Is a common form of inflammatory arthritis and caused by an elevation of serum uric acid levels that lead crystal to start accumulate in the joints.



What cause Gout happen?

Uric acid is waste material created from the normal break down of purines. Purines is a natural substance found in foods for example meat, poultry, seafood, liver, beans, mushrooms, anchovies and mackerel. Usually, uric acid will remove from blood by kidney and excrete out of body along with urine. However, when kidney unable remove the uric acid effectively or body produce too much uric acid, the excessive uric acid will start to accumulate and cause high amount of uric acid in body. This condition is known as hyperuricemia. Eventually high amount of uric acid in blood convert the acid into urate crystals which start accumulated at parts of body like joints and soft tissues. The uric acid crystal will trigger inflammation of joints to start swelling and painful.


Several Risk Factor of Gout:

  • ·        Age and gender

Men produce more uric acid than women, although level of uric acid of women approach those men after menopause
  • ·         Genetic factor

If family member has gout, the probability of getting gout is big
  • ·         Overweight

Increases the risk of gout as there is more turnover of body tissue, which means more uric acid will produce as metabolic waste product. Higher levels of body fat also increase levels of systemic inflammation as fat cells produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

  • ·         Having kidney problems

Reduce the efficiency of body to remove the waste material (uric acid) from body and this will cause an elevated uric acid in blood

  • ·         Exposure to lead

Chronic lead exposure has been linked to certain cases of gout

  • ·         Taking certain medications such as diuretics or niacin can increase uric acid content in body


  • ·         Eating habits
Frequent eat food that high in purines will increase level of uric acid in blood and also drink too much of alcohol will interferes with the removal of uric acid from the body

Symptom of Gout:

-Intense joint pain that subsides to discomfort, inflammation, and redness
-Redness, tenderness and swelling of the joints of big toe, but can also affect the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, and fingers 




















Treatment/Way to Prevent Gout:


  • Medication


-Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which can reduce both pain and inflammation around the joints

-Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, can be injected directly into the affected joints for relief within a few hours

-Avoiding intake high-purine foods such as anchovies, asparagus, dried beans and peas, mushrooms and organ meats (such as livers and kidneys), certain fish, seafood and shellfish, including anchovies, sardines, herring, mussels, codfish, scallops, trout and haddock, some meats, such as bacon, turkey, veal, venison and organ meats like liver


-Drink more water and avoid alcohol, because alcohol can also raise the level of uric acid in the blood
